MARCH 5, 2012

I would like to extend my gratitude to the workers in the child-serving system marking Social Work Week March 5-11. I encourage everyone to reflect on the work of social workers and their dedication and commitment to the safety and well-being of the children and youth in British Columbia.

Social workers meet with families, work with fosterparents and community organizations, work in hospitals and schools, and travel to remote locations and to large cities. They often do not know what their day may have in store nor are they at their desk from 9-5, often putting in much longer hours and working into the night. Social workers selflessly devote themselves to helping others live full and prosperous lives. They are caring, hardworking, and decisive individuals and they hold themselves to a high ethical and moral standard. They are our champions.

This year’s theme for Social Work Week, “Celebrating Strengths” reminds us that social workers build relationships that help people recognize their own strengths and act as partners for change to ensure that people are supported in the ways that they require. We can assist our social workers by advocating for environments that support children’s safety and well-being. We can show our social workers a genuine appreciation for their commitment to their day-to-day workand for all of their tireless efforts to strengthen communities.

I am so proud of the efforts and achievements of these extraordinary people. Please join me during Social Work Week to express gratitude to the social workers of B.C.
