B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth, Dr. Jennifer Charlesworth, and her staff are mourning the death of Joan Phillip, Amshen, a respected Indigenous leader, MLA, social justice activist and deeply devoted partner, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

“Joan lived a life based on integrity and generosity. She brought tremendous wisdom, courage and heart to everything she did,” Charlesworth said. “She had a deep love for young people and families, and she understood the importance of culture, connection and community in helping them thrive. Her passing leaves an enormous space in the lives of those who loved her and in the many communities and causes strengthened by her presence.”

Joan was a member of the B.C. Legislative Assembly’s Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth to which the RCYBC reported. “I was always struck by Joan’s warmth, optimism and fierce commitment to what mattered,” Charlesworth said. “She spoke from experience and with a clear sense of responsibility to future generations.”

Joan’s commitment to young people was also reflected throughout her career, beginning with her work as a youth counsellor and continuing through her support for affordable childcare, culturally grounded programs for Indigenous children and families, and training and mentorship opportunities for vulnerable youth.

“Above all, Joan loved her family deeply. That love was at the heart of who she was and how she moved through the world. At her celebration of life her family reminded people to lead with love and to always stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard.”

“On behalf of everyone at the Office of the Representative for Children and Youth, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her life partner, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, their family, and all those who knew and loved her. We will remember her with deep respect and gratitude.”
