October is Foster Family Month, the perfect time to honour the many people who are making a difference in the lives of children and youth and helping them build brighter futures.
Foster families provide a safe and secure environment to foster children in transition, from infants to teenagers, making a lasting commitment, often years long. When children are removed from their homes, many have experienced difficult times and are scared and wary. Earning their trust can be a slow process, but connections are important for all children and youth.
My Office works with foster families most often through our advocacy function. Every year we assist children, youth and families who are having challenges with the systems that provide service to them. However the role foster parents play in the lives of their foster children is what counts most for them on a day-to-day basis.
Children thrive on attention to their daily lives. Foster families play a crucial role in developing future stable adults just by talking to their foster children about their day, helping them be successful in school and listening to them.
It is in the interest of every British Columbian to ensure that foster families are supported. Our future and the future of our province lie with our children. My staff and I are deeply committed to supporting foster families in their vital role.
My staff and I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your commitment, dedication and the work you do caring for British Columbia’s children and youth. By opening your home and heart, you leave an indelible mark on generations to come.
